  1. Some common questions and answers relating to the operation of Archives
  2. are listed below:

  4. 1.    When I enter directory names, sometimes I have to enter the last
  5.     backslash and sometimes not.
  6.  
  7.     Archives assumes the last backslash if you are working with a
  8.     directory name only.  However, if Archives was anticipating a
  9.     filename (as in copying files) and you don't enter the last
  10.     backslash, then it assumes that the name entered was a filename.

  12.     For Example when changing directories using the F5 hot key if you
  13.     type:
  14.  
  15.        a.    TEMPDIR        then Archives will look for a directory
  16.                 below the current directory named TEMPDIR.
  17.  
  18.        b.    \TEMPDIR    then archives will look one level above
  19.          or        the root directory for the directory.
  20.         \TEMPDIR\    Either method is correct to type.
  21.  
  22.     For Example when copying files if you type the copy to
  23.     location as:
  24.  
  25.        a.    TEMPDIR        then Archives will assume that either of
  26.          or        these entries is a filename.
  27.         \TEMPDIR
  28.  
  29.        b.    \TEMPDIR\    then archives will look one level above
  30.          or        the root directory and copy these file(s)
  31.         \TEMPDIR\*.*    using the copy to file mask of *.* for
  32.                 this directory.  Either method is
  33.                 correct to type.

  35. 2.    How do I enter an @file for ZIP files?
  36.  
  37.     When ZIPPING a file, you will select this one @file from the
  38.     Viewer Window BEFORE you select ╗Compress½.  This means that the
  39.     FILE STATS must be displayed in the Window Title bar and you will
  40.     be selecting the file from the Viewer Window.

  42.     When UNZIPPING a file, you will enter the @file AFTER you select
  43.     ½Decompress╗. (A small dialog box opens after the UNZIP dialog
  44.     box opens.)

  46. 3.    The root drive where the temporary files are located is littered
  47.     with   !ARCH00.bat   or   !ARCH00.   files.
  48.  
  49.     These are temporary files created and deleted by Archives.  If
  50.     ARCHIVES.EXE and ARCH.PIF were setup properly these files would
  51.     not exist.

  53.     Archives automatically deletes these files when the \Archive COM
  54.     window (the DOS window) is closed.  If the name of this window
  55.     is not the same as in Archives, then Archives may prematurely
  56.     delete these files.  Similarly, if you keep one of these DOS
  57.     windows open, then Archives doesn't know when to delete the
  58.     temporary files.
  59.     This DOS window is named in both ARCSETUP.EXE and ARCH.PIF,
  60.     and these names must match.  They did in the original version as
  61.     shipped.

  63.     The !ARCH00.bat file is a temporary hidden batch file.  It is
  64.     hidden so that it doesn't get zipped into a file if you are
  65.     compressing files from the root directory where this temporary
  66.     file is located.

  68.     The !ARCH. file (note, no file extension) is sometimes created by
  69.     Archives and is used as an @file for ZIP type files.

  71.     You can delete these files using Archives.  It will view hidden
  72.     and delete hidden files.

  74. 4.    Can I run more than one window of Archives at a time.  Sure.
  75.     Just close all \Archives COM windows (the DOS window) as they
  76.     finish and try not to have more than one \Archives COM window
  77.     opened at a time.

  79. 5.    Can I start Archives from a windows Run command and include the
  80.     filename that I am wanting to view on the Command Line with
  81.     Archives?  Yes, if the application is registered.  Unfortunately,
  82.     unregistered users must always run Arcsetup first.  Arcsetup
  83.     passes an unregistered code to Archives so that Archives will
  84.     function properly.

  86.     If unregistered users startup a second copy of Archives while the
  87.     first copy of Archives is still open, then you don't have to
  88.     run Arcsetup first, and can include a filename to open with
  89.     Archives from the command line.  The first copy of Archives will
  90.     pass the password to the second copy of Archives thru Windows.

  92. 6.    Can I launch a DOS window and get the DOS prompt from Archives?
  93.     Yes, try F12 key then press enter.  This is an obscure PIF file
  94.     option, but is located under the File + PIF Functions on the
  95.     Archives main menu.

  97.     Another method is to select the F10 key, then when you get the
  98.     Run dialog box, check the "Exclude Run file" checkbox.
  99.  
  100.     If ARCH.PIF is setup as a Window (386 systems only) and your
  101.     _DEFAULT.PIF is set up as Full Screen, then one of the above
  102.     options will give you a Windowed DOS prompt and the other a
  103.     Full screen DOS prompt.  286 systems will get a Full Screen
  104.     prompt in both cases.
